This README file goes with the AstroCappella 2.0 CD-ROM materials. This file addresses some of the problems you might encounter with the AstroCappella 2.0 CD-ROM. This assumes you have already looked at the files. If you're on a Mac and the pages didn't automatically load, read on... If you're on a PC, click on the cdrom_start.html file and away you go. I'm on a Mac and all I get is the 2 CD icons on my desktop. What do I do now? If you have a browser installed, open the AstroCappella2.0 CD icon and find the index.shtml file and open it. I don't have a browser installed on my machine. You won't be able to view the .html or .shtml files. You should get a browser - they're free. You may still be able to view the movies and the PowerPoint files (.mov and .pps) in the top directory of the AstroCappella disk, if you have QuickTime and PowerPoint. At the very least, you should be able to hear the music, using your CD player software or your stereo. I don't hear any music on my computer. On a Mac: open the Audio CD icon and double-click on a track. On a PC: you will have to open your audio CD player software and click the play button. Make sure you have a sound card and speakers! My computer doesn't recognize the .html file type. Open your browser and select Open File or Open Page in your File menu. Select cdrom_start.html (on a PC) or index.shtml (on a Mac). I get question marks over some of the images in the blue bar on the left side of the pages. These navigation buttons use JavaScript. You must have JavaScript enabled in order to view them. To enable JavaScript in Netscape: Under the Edit menu, select Preferences and choose Advanced. On the right, check the box labelled Enable JavaScript. To enable Scripting in Internet Explorer on a Mac: Under the Edit menu, select Preferences and choose Web Content under the Web Browser heading. On the right, check the box labelled Enable Scripting and click OK. To enable Scripting in Internet Explorer on a PC: Under the Tools menu, choose Internet Options and select the Security tab. Click on the Custom Level options. Scroll down until you see Scripting. The first item, Active Scripting, should be enabled. Images sometimes overlay each other or the text. Try adjusting your font size or your browser's window size. To adjust your font size: Netscape: choose Preferences (under the Edit menu) and select Fonts (under Appearance) Macs/Internet Explorer: choose Browser Display (under Web Browser) PCs/Internet Explorer: choose Text Size (under the View menu) I see garbage on my Netscape window when I try to view the PowerPoint slide shows. You need to set your Netscape preferences for PowerPoint. Under the Netscape Edit menu, choose Preferences. In the left part of the box, select Applications (which appears under the Navigator heading). In the box that appears on the right side of the preferences, scroll down until you find application/ms-powerpoint or Microsoft PowerPoint Select it and click Edit. The MIME type should be application/ms-powerpoint The Suffixes should be ppt, pps If these aren't there, type them in. If you have Microsoft PowerPoint installed on your machine, click on the Application button in the central section, and click the Choose button. Find and select PowerPoint in the new dialog box. Then click OK in the Edit Type box and OK in the Preferences box. PowerPoint files should download or display for you now. If you don't have PowerPoint installed on your machine, you won't be able to view these files. I can't view the movies. Download the latest version of QuickTime from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ - It's free! These movies may not work in the latest version of Windows Media Player. If you have the latest version of QuickTime and your browser still tries (unsuccessfully) to play the movies in Media Player, you can open QuickTime and open the .mov files from within QuickTime or force your computer to play .mov files in QuickTime. To do this, read on... On a PC using Internet Explorer: Open the My Computer icon on the desktop. Then choose View, then Folder Options, then File Types. Scroll down until you find (probably several) entries for QuickTime movies. One of these, when you select it, will probably have "mov" as the extension (listed below). If you then select Edit, you'll get a window with the specifics. To change the software used, click on the new Edit button and click on Browse to search your computer for the QuickTime software. Select it and click OK. The "Actions" in the Edit File Type box should be "open". If it's not, click New and type open in the box. In Netscape, select Preferences (under the Edit menu). In the left part of the box, select Applications (which appears under the Navigator heading). (In Internet Explorer on a Mac, this is called "File Helpers".) In the box that appears on the right side of the preferences, scroll down until you find QuickTime Video and select it and click Edit. (If you don't find it you can create it using the New button below the scrolling window.) In the Edit Type window, the Description is QuickTime Video the MIME type is video/quicktime and the suffixes are qt, mov You can choose the plug-in or the application (select it via the Choose button). When you've selected QuickTime, click OK in this box and in the Preferences box. I'm having trouble with something not discussed here.
